Many Factors go in to owning or running a coffee shop. I believe that these types of businesses are very important to our communities these days because they serve as a calm place to study or gather your thoughts. I wanted to figure out what made each of them so popular; therefore, I evaluated many different shops around town and followed a criteria to go by on judging them.
Some may see it as the appearance of the shop and some may see it as the taste of the coffee itself. There is always more than what meets the eye and in this case, I evaluated all aspects of the shop. In my criteria, I evaluated the store itself. I found how the accessibility and how easy it was to get to the store. I also looked at the advertising. Advertising is a big part of our world and I commented on how well I felt they did with advertising. Another area of grading the store would be the prices. I had to ask myself, "was the merchandise priced appropriately?" Lastly, the store front and the special services matter as well. The storefront makes people want to come in and see what your shop is all about. This is what brings in the customers. Special services refers to what kind of "extras" the shop provides.
Next in the criteria is the coffee itself. I had a cup of coffee at each cafe and set up a criteria I could go by while drinking it. First is the aroma which is the first feeling you get out of the coffee. I smelt the coffee as soon as it was handed to me. Next is the most obvious, flavor. This describes the coffee's taste. After that, I decided on the body, which describes the coffee's mouth-feel. This is the feeling of the coffee as it settles on your tongue and coats the inside of your mouth. Finally, comes the aftertaste. After you swallow a sip of coffee, the sensations that you will experience in your mouth compromise the aftertaste.
For all of these different criteria's, I used different rating systems. For the criteria on the store, I just gave brief descriptions of how I felt it was best graded. On the flavors, I gave all a 1-10 rating system with 1 being the lowest and most unpleasant. Along with that, I gave a brief comment.
